An ocular migraine can be characterized as one that affects your vision and includes sensations such as numbness. They are rather common and may or may not be followed by a headache. When they occur, vision is only affected in one eye, resulting in images being distorted in the center and possibly expanding to a side of the eye. Sight may be lost temporarily.

You do not hear about cluster headaches near as often as migraines but they can be much more severe. They occur in cycles and normally have a pattern to them. They happen at about the same time each day and this cycle can keep going on for weeks or months. Unlike migraines, cluster headaches are short (lasting fifteen minutes to three hours).

Besides being annoying and painful, headaches can take over your life. While several different factors can cause headaches, stress is the leading contributor. When your mind has a mental overload, a stress headache occurs. The headache sends the message that your body is distressed. Therefore, many people find that stress and headaches go hand in hand.

People affected with stress can be separated in three different classifications – the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Get To Know Your Cause Of A Migraine Headache

Migraine headaches are one of the most common types of headaches, and there are plenty of factors causing them, though whenever a migraine headache strikes, it does suddenly and without any visible reason. According to many medical researches serotonin plays an important role in triggering migraines. To identify your cause of a migraine headache consult with your doctor.

Where the chemical called serotonin is concerned, its levels could be responsible for migraines, though there are tons of other causes for migraine headaches, such as stress, food allergies, working with bright lights, having a cold, pregnancy and many others.

It may take quite some time to identify what exactly is the cause of a migraine headache in your case. Until then, you could get relief by taking over-the-counter medicines, or trying a number of home remedies, which though simple, are often incredibly effective.

To fight with this awful malady you first have to collect information about the occurrences. Keep notes on when the migraine attacks and have these records ready when you visit your doctor. If the reason is not clear, you will be asked to undertake a number of tests, which can identify the cause of a migraine headache more accurately. Do not forget to note what types of remedies have been tried to cure the headache.

It may come as news to you, but children suffer from migraines as much as adults do. Unfortunately, children are rarely believed when they say they have a headache because adults often take such complaints as attempts for getting out of things like going to school. Agreed, at times this is exactly the idea; however, if children say they are suffering from headaches they should be referred to a doctor for further check up.

The cause of migraine headaches is difficult to pinpoint without a number of tests. However, doctors are fast in getting to the root of this problem once they get information regarding the time, date, frequency and any other helpful material that you have gathered.

Though the majority of causes of a migraine headache still remain a mystery, it has been observed that the migraine can be controlled with home remedies, over-the-counter medicines and a lot of sleep. It has been proven that drinking hot herbal tea is also beneficial in some cases. Chamomile tea and green tea have been observed to be especially helpful providing a very soothing effect when migraine strikes.

Typically, migraine headaches are accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to both light and noise. There are many different causes attributed to migraine headaches, and these migraine headache triggers can affect just about anyone.

All you have to do for proof is examine the statistics. In America alone, over twenty-eight million people suffer from migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are more common in women; for every one man who suffers from a migraine headache, there are three women.

Migraines and migraine headache triggers have become somewhat easier to manage than they used to be. Often times, you can just examine the migraine headache triggers and determine which aspect of your life is the cause of your migraine headaches. Once you know which migraine headache triggers relate to your situation, it will become easier to find a treatment.

What Are the Most Common Migraine Headache Triggers?

Of all the migraine headache triggers, the most common one is stress. Another common trigger of migraines is certain foods, such as alcohol, aged cheeses, chocolate, aspartame, caffeine, msg, seasonings, and some canned or processed foods. Migraines can also be caused by fasting or skipping meals.

Physical factors such as increased sexual activity, intense exercise, or a change in sleep patterns are also migraine headache triggers. Changes in the environment and certain medications often act as triggers of migraine headaches, as do sun glare and bright lights. Hormonal changes can also cause migraines, and this may be why a significantly greater number of women than men are affected by migraines. Some women experience migraines during pregnancy or menopause.

Are You at Risk?

There are several risk factors that make someone more prone to migraine headaches. Migraine headaches most commonly occur in girls that have already passed through puberty. Women who experience migraines find that their likelihood of experiencing one increases during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause. Migraine headaches also run in families; if even one of your parents’ experiences migraines then you are much more likely to develop them yourself.

Treating Migraine Headaches

Although previously, the only way to treat migraine headaches was to take aspirin, this is no longer the case. Now, there are both preventative medications and pain-relieving medications that are intended specifically for migraine treatment. There are also other alternative treatments, such as acupuncture, massage, vitamins, herbs, minerals, and biofeedback. Migraine headaches can be prevented by maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Maybe you have migraine yourself, or someone you know does. You start to wonder if your child is going through the same thing. They might be complaining of headaches, or going through cycles of symptoms that are familiar to migraine sufferers. Here are 5 things to keep in mind as you try to help your child:

1. Migraine can strike in children

More than half of the adult migraineurs (migraine sufferers) report that they had their first headache as a child. Of children with migraine, it’s estimated that about a third get their first attack before the age of 5. We know that children as young as 2 deal with migraine, and possibly even infants, although we still don’t understand exactly how infants interact with pain.

2. Don’t assume your child is just looking for attention

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if children are really suffering, or if they’re trying to get out of something. Some children of migraineurs may simply imitate the behavior that they’ve seen in a parent. Dr Sarah Cheyette, a pediatric neurologist and a mother herself, suggests that you not focus on the pain but tell your child they will "feel better soon". At the same time, keep a close watch for yourself and try to see the patterns.

3. Remember that migraine is different in everyone

We’re all familiar with the headache pain that often goes along with migraine. But sometimes migraine attacks do not involve pain at all. Some people only see flashing lights. There’s nausea. Weakness. Pain in different areas, even the abdomen. Watch for overall patterns in your child that may be related. Look for times when their behavior changes. When they’re sick to their stomach. It’s up to you to watch for symptoms that your child may not even realize are there.

It was a long time before I was actually diagnosed with headaches. For a long time I just had a vague idea that I "didn’t feel well" at various times, though I couldn’t really explain it. Your child may be dealing with something similar. Write down what you observe and share it with your doctor.

4. When to contact a doctor

Contact a doctor right away if there is a sudden change in the headaches your child is experiencing. This is especially important if your child gets any of the following symptoms: stiff neck, fever, dizziness, problems breathing, blurred vision, or headaches that are made worse with exertion. Your doctor can guide you through further observation and testing.

5. Learn about the available treatments

There’s no reason to panic if you think your child may have migraine. Even if you’ve struggled with migraine for years yourself, treatments for your child may be different and more effective.

Don’t assume that your medication will work for your child. Many adult drugs have not been tested for children and are not known to be safe. The same goes for natural therapies.

However, there are very effective treatments for children. Many common painkillers may be sufficient, as long as they’re not taken too often (in many cases twice a week should be the maximum). For many, lifestyle changes can make a huge difference – more exercise, better eating habits, for example. One natural treatment that seems to work very well for children is biofeedback. When it comes to specific migraine drugs, recent trials have found certain doses of Imitrex to be helpful for children.

Children with migraine can look forward to treatments that were not even thought of ten years ago, and they live in a world where we have a far better understanding of migraine every year. Migraine does not have to ruin the life of a child, but can be an important challenge that you can help them through.

I suffer from migraine headaches. Plagued for many years, I do not know why I get them and the doctors have a wide variety of opinions. Today’s migraine was a doozy.

If you have every had a migraine you know. If you are not sure if you have had one, here is a brief rendition of a bad one…

I dropped my daughter off at nursery school. I had a few hours to get through my list of errands. First stop was Sears to take care of some billing matter. I was in the store for quite some time and they had floruesant lighting. This is a known culprit for causing a migraine headache. There is something about the flickering pattern of the lights that goes unnoticed by most people. The zigzag patterns and flashes of electric light started echoing in my eyes. No one else can see them except me and other migraine sufferers. When the zigzags start it makes it difficult to see clearly. I was happy to get out of there, but not happy that I had a migraine coming on.

The next stop was Kmart. I only had one item that I needed to buy, but I would have liked to comb through the store and do some shopping. The flickers of electric light intensified in my eye sockets. This reminded me to get what I came for and get out of there as soon as possible.

I was hungry, so I thought that might be aggravating the migraine (another reported cause of migraines – low blood sugar). I stopped to get something to eat. I still had some grocery shopping on my agenda, so I ate lunch quickly. I watched the clock and tried my best to out run the inevitable.

Migraine Triggers synopsis from http://www.NYM.org

A wide range of events and conditions can alter conditions in the brain that bring on nerve excitation and trigger migraines. They include, but are not limited to the following:

– Emotional stress (although the headaches often erupt after the stress has eased).
– Intense physical exertion.
– Abrupt weather changes.
– Bright or flickering lights.
– High altitude.
– Travel motion.
– Changes in sleep patterns.
– Low blood sugar has been known to trigger headaches and fasting can often precipitate migraines.
– Chemicals found in certain foods may trigger headaches in some people. More than 100 foods have the capacity to trigger migraine headache.

See http://www.nym.org/healthinfo/docs/097/doc97nonmedic.html#triggerfoods for a list of foods that may trigger migraine headaches.

At the supermarket, my migraine headache was in full swing. My patience was wearing thin, my list of items was not near complete and the numbness started in my left hand. By the time I got to the check out counter I was nauseous. The numbness had moved from my left hand, across my face and was tingling my right hand. The woman at the counter asked if I was ok as I flexed my right hand trying to regain feeling. I was afraid and unable to talk at that point I just shock my head, no. Once I get to that stage of the migraine my speech is impaired. I am unable to speak in complete sentences, so I did not even try to answer her. I made it to the car in a complete panic.

The supermarket was only a few minutes drive from my house. I pulled in the driveway, dropped my pocketbook at the door and left the groceries in the car. I yelled to my husband to pick up my daughter and get the groceries. I took a few aspirins and went straight to bed. A cold compress and sleep is the only remedy that works for my migraines.

Three hours later, my husband woke me up for dinner – God bless his soul. He knows my migraine routine all too well and took care of the kids while I was on sabbatical.

It took about an hour after waking up to fully recover. The migraine was gone, but I did not have much of an appetite. Your brain also feels like it has voids. Empty spaces that need to come together before you feel normal again. It is an unsettling feeling not being in control of your mind. The aftermath is like trying to do a jigsaw puzzle, but you are missing a few pieces.
