Does your teenager suffer from migraines? This is a more common occurance than you might think. As a result, your son or daughter likely has an uphill battle to maintain good grades. A recent statistic shows that a 5 percent drop in high school GPA, a 5 percent drop in the likelihood of graduating high school and a 15 percent reduction in the likelihood that he or she will even be able to go to college. There are a number of reasons why this happens. Migraines are the cause of up to 40 percent reduction in excused absences from school, also difficulty paying attention in class as well as failing to complete homework on time or at all. A public policy professor at American University in Washington, D.C., by the name of Joseph Sabia, and University of Colorado at Denver economics professor, Daniel Rees have looked at data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Both of these professors said that teens who had nonmigraine headaches didn’t suffer the same drops in academic performance as the ones who had migraines. This happened to be the first study of its kind to examine the effect of migraine headaches on adolescents and their ability to achievement academic goals. Sabia and Rees conducted the study by analyzing migraine experiences and high school grades of 214 siblings from 105 families. They obtained information on high school completion and college attendance from 280 siblings belonging to 137 families, according to the news release.

Despite its widespread use for over 100 years, we still don’t fully understand how paracetamol works to relieve pain. However, it is now thought that it works by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord.

The body produces prostaglandins in response to injury and certain diseases. One of the effects of prostaglandins is to sensitise nerve endings, causing pain (presumably to prevent us from causing further harm to the area). As paracetamol reduces the production of these nerve sensitising prostaglandins it is thought it may increase our pain threshold, so that although the cause of the pain remains, we can feel it less.

Paracetamol is about as effective as aspirin at relieving mild to moderate pain, but unlike aspirin it has no anti-inflammatory effect.

Codeine is a slightly stronger painkiller known as an opioid. Opioid painkillers work by mimicking the action of naturally occurring pain-reducing chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins are found in the brain and spinal cord and reduce pain by combining with opioid receptors.

Codeine mimicks the action of natural endorphins by combining with the opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This blocks the transmission of pain signals sent by the nerves to the brain. Therefore, even though the cause of the pain may remain, less pain is actually felt.

Migraleve pink tablets contain 8mg of codeine, which in combination with the paracetamol, is effective at relieving the pain of migraine headaches.

Buclizine hydrochloride is a type of medicine called an antihistamine. It is used to treat the sensation of nausea that can occur in a migraine attack and thus prevent vomiting.

Vomiting is controlled by an area of the brain called the vomiting centre. The vomiting centre is responsible for causing feelings of sickness (nausea) and for the vomiting reflex. Buclizine works by blocking histamine receptors in the vomiting centre, which prevents the vomiting centre from receiving nerve messages that would otherwise cause nausea and vomiting.

If taken at the first sign of a migraine, Migraleve pink tablets can prevent the migraine developing fully. Adults over 14 years of age should take two Migraleve pink tablets at the first sign of a migraine. Children aged 10 to 14 years should take one Migraleve pink tablet as soon as it is known that a migraine attack has started or is imminent. If the migraine continues, further treatment should be with Migraleve yellow tablets to help relieve the migraine headache. You should not start taking Migraleve yellow until four hours after your dose of Migraleve pink. Do not exceed the recommended dose. (The maximum dose for adults aged over 14 years is two Migraleve pink and six Migraleve yellow tablets in 24 hours. The maximum dose for children aged 10 to 14 years is one Migraleve pink and three Migraleve yellow tablets in 24 hours.)

Diets to Prevent Migraines For many years, there was not much relief that a sufferer could find from the symptoms of these headaches. More recently, there have been new drugs and nasal sprays developed which have brought relief from this ailment. There has also been research to help people lessen the effects of these awful headaches.

A migraine headache is more than regular headache pain. A migraine headache brings unbearable, throbbing pain along with nausea, possibly vomiting and blurred vision. A migraine headache makes normal, daily activities difficult, and these headaches can last a few hours or a few days.

The research has also shown that certain foods in the diet may trigger the onset of migraine headaches, and there is now information on a migraine diet for those who suffer. Some research has identified the items which cause migraine headaches, and the researchers have provided much information on a migraine diet that those affected should follow. The people who have followed this advice have found some relief in the intensity of the headaches they suffer and the number of headaches that they suffer. Many of these people personally will recommend the migraine diet suggested by the researchers.

Avoid Some Foods to Avoid Migraine Headaches

For many years, people ate normal foods and had no idea that these might contribute to the headaches that they suffered. If they had known, the migraine headache is so painful; surely they would have avoided these foods. Now they know and their lives are better for the information on migraine diet. First of all, there is information that alcoholic beverages might be the trigger that sets off a migraine. Red wine seems to be one of the worst of these beverages for those affected by migraine. Processed meats are also on the list of foods to avoid on a migraine diet. Some fruits also may be the triggers. These fruits include avocadoes, passion fruits, and papayas.

Unfortunately the list of foods to avoid for a migraine diet is fairly long, but surely any person with more than one migraine will want to avoid these foods. These people should avoid chocolate and other products from cocoa. Caffeine is also on the list of foods that should be avoided along with dairy products including sour cream and buttermilk. Hopefully this information will help people avoid the pain and suffering that comes with migraine headaches.

Pain – 7 Ways To Head Off A Migraine Headache

Twenty-Eight million Americans’ experience pain from migraine headaches and a great many have no clue as to what to do about it. That means about one person in every four household’s experiences throbbing head pain. Usually one side of the head, sometimes accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and/or sound. Some people may experience an "aura" before the migraine hits, characterized by flashes of light, zigzag lines, blind spots and numbness or tingling in the arm and face.

Migraine pain can last from 4 to 72 hours, knocking a person out of commission. But much can be done to minimize attacks and ease the symptoms.

This article contains advice from Seymour Diamond, M.D. director and founder of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, who states that pain may be triggered by certain foods, stress, and a drop in barometric pressure or fluctuating hormones. But migraine triggers vary from person to person and what causes a migraine one month may not the next. That’s why Dr. Diamond has patients keep a diary that notes when headaches occurred and what brought them on.

In about one third of pain sufferers, certain kinds of foods set off a migraine. Potential triggers include ripened cheeses such as cheddar, Stilton, Brie, Emmentaler and Camembert; pickled or dried meats; and some vegetables, including broad, Lima, Fava beans and Snow Peas.

Pain Sufferers should also consider avoiding citrus fruits, figs, raisins, avocados, red plums, papayas, and bananas, plus skip all cheeses, chocolate, bread made with sourdough, excess caffeine or red wine an foods containing mono-sodium glutamate.

If you can’t change a situation that’s causing stress, at least "put it in perspective," states Dr. Diamond. To control stress, do deep breathing, learn yoga, or rat chi, or consider biofeedback.

Playing video games can trigger a migraine pain attack, as can spending long hours at the computer. Remember to always wear sunglasses when you are outdoors, and place an antiglare screen on your video monitor.

At the Diamond Headache Clinic, doctors counsel against oversleeping and meal skipping. "If you want to sleep in on a Saturday at least get up and eat something," says Dr. Diamond, "Then go back to bed."

The American Migraine Study II found that only 48% of people whose symptoms met the definition of a migraine had been diagnosed by a doctor.

So, work with your doctor on a therapy plan that’s right for you. Some medications help keep migraine from occurring; others short-circuit the pain. Make sure you go through a process of elimination of all elements affecting your life-style and investigate your biological needs to filter out those things that work and those that don’t when it comes to dealing with Migraine pain.

Causes And Remedy Of Frequent Headaches

Headaches are a common cause of suffering. It is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help. Learn more about the cause and remedy of frequent headache in this article.

Headaches are one of the most common reasons people seek medical help. Headaches are a common cause of suffering, but all headaches are not created equal. For example, a migraine is a splitting headache that just seems to set in apparently caused by no reason at all. If you have a stable pattern of recurring headaches accompanied by nausea at least some of the time, you probably have migraine.

The symptoms accompany the headache including nausea, vomiting, or the feeling that light bothers the eyes (photophobia) or sound bothers the ears (phonophobia). Some people seem prone to migraine headaches, others get tension headaches, sinus headaches or cluster headaches. Once the pain of headache sets in, it is sheer agony. Headaches are diagnosed based on symptoms. No procedure can determine the diagnosis.

If you’re not sure what triggers your headaches, you may want to start keeping a record. People who get headaches are thought to have an inherited abnormality in the regulation of blood vessels. Triggers can be divided into different groups, including emotional triggers, stress, environmental, chemical, food and beverage.

Though it has been seen that some headaches does run in families, it’s not necessary that children of headache patients will also have it. Insufficient sleep, anxiety, problems, and worries give rise to the tension headache. Headaches can also be triggered by allergies and stress. Although many sufferers have a family history of headaches, the exact hereditary nature of this condition is not known. Stress, insomnia, over sleeping, and hunger may also trigger some form of headaches such as migraine.

You may have some triggers that start your headache attack at one time, and then these triggers can change. Cheese (pizza) is also a triggering factor in some people, while in others it only aggravates an already existing condition. You may find it hard to avoid them, but for some people, environmental changes can trigger a migraine. Some even go to say that a migraine maybe triggered by the end of a stressful situation.

Herbs such as Ginkgo and Feverfew assists in lowering the intensity of the pain. If the pain is severe, which it frequently is during a full-blown migraine attack, then you may need medication. Being aware of what brings on your headaches is key to finding drug free relief. Migraine may be, relieved by identifying and avoiding problem foods. Some sufferers respond to salt, lactose in milk and ice cream, cigarette smoke, birth control pills, caffeine and tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods.

Virtually all headache therapies are designed to eliminate, or at least mitigate, pain. Individuals who experience several moderate or severe migraine headaches per month or whose headaches do not respond readily to medications should avoid triggers and consider modifications of their lifestyle. Some people find that by falling asleep, they can actually eliminate the attack. Sometimes a separate visit to your medical practitioner to discuss your headaches specifically may be necessary.

There are a number of alternative headache treatments such as using aromatherapy, acupunture, biofeedback, homeopathy and herbal remedy such as feverfew. Tension headaches may be helped by taking a 5-HTP supplement, or peppermint oil. Individuals with occasional mild migraine headaches that do not interfere with daily activities usually medicate themselves with over-the-counter (OTC, non-prescription) pain relievers (analgesics). There are several natural solutions that can help you fight headaches, but the first thing you need to do is work out what sort of headaches you are actually suffering from.

Crucial to the appropriate treatment of headache is the proper diagnosis of its type, and migraine headache is a particularly common form of recurring headache. There are many factors that contribute to the onset of headache pain and even migraines. Be careful not to overuse any headache medication; they are good friends when you need them, but poor masters! Try putting a cold damp cloth on your forehead or temple (on the side that is painful), or use a frozen bag of peas wrapped in a small towel, as cold compresses can sometimes help with the pain.

Many researchers believe that migraine and tension headache are close relatives, which explains why many headache patients can experience both kinds of headaches, and why similar treatments can help both migraine and tension headache. Tension headaches often start in the middle of the day. Tension headaches may be mild or severe. Some people report that their tension headaches are worse than a migraine headache.

Migraine Headache Relief – Easy Tips

Gain relief from Migraine Headaches. There are always alternatives that are effective in treating migraine headache instead of resorting to prescription drugs.

Have you ever experienced a horrible migraine headache, an aching sinus headache, or a pounding cluster headache? Do you feel things like nausea, light, noise, or odor sensitivity, blurry vision, fatigue, or dizziness when among other symptoms? Do you need a way to ease your migraine pain?

If so, you aren’t the only one with this type of suffering. 40% of the world’s population is headache sufferer, just like you. Most people try over the counter medication, but a little aspirin here and ibuprofen there can lead to serious problems if taken on a constant basis. Health problems include internal bleeding and serious kidney disease.

There is a simpler way of relieving your migraine headache that doesn’t have as much of a risk.

Something very simple can mean the difference between a long, drawn out, throbbing migraine headache and, at the very least, a shortened one that is less intense. Have you been drinking enough water? Drinking water can reduce the severity of your migraine headache. Mild dehydration can cause your migraine headache to be a lot worse and a lot longer lived. So be sure you drink plenty of water.

Second, why not try a warm bath? If you can, lower the lights or include soft candle light during the bath. This way it might help reduce some of your symptoms. Trying a cool wet compress placed on your head where it hurts may help as well as this may also help alleviate some of the migraine headache pain you are experiencing.

When using the cold compress to relieve your migraine headache, it’s best to do it in a dark quiet room. Doing this can help relieve some of the sensitivity and may get rid you of the nausea as well. When the compress starts to warm, run cool water over it and re-apply it.

Massaging the face may help as well. Gentle massage in a circle motion under the cheek bones may help relieve discomfort brought on by sinus headaches and stimulates blood circulation. The good thing about getting the blood circulating is that it is an important factor in any treatment for migraine headaches.

Another massage technique is to rub the temples. While sitting in a quiet dim room; close your eyes and try to relax. Use the same circular motion as before and gently massage the area around your temples. If possible, get your spouse or a friend to massage your temples for you.

Using these techniques, you may relieve yourself of the excruciating pain involved with a migraine headache.

In important to remember that medical treatment for migraine is expensive and their impact on the body and side effects can be severe. If you attack the source, all the symptoms will naturally disappear. No matter how long you have been suffering from migraine headaches, you must not simply go on coping with this condition.

There is a countless number of migraine and headache relief solutions available in the market. Remedies available to vary the natural alternatives to drug therapy. The impact of these treatments may vary from person to person, however, it is necessary to identify the most suitable one of you, and the corresponding selection.

In guiding the selection of a suitable remedy, would be useful to know the causes and trigger factors of headache. Especially for migraine, headaches due to hormonal fluctuations, leading to blood vessels in the head and neck contract, then expand. This expansion of blood vessels, leading to headaches, the first phase can last anywhere from minutes to days. Change accompanied by the expansion of the interaction of hormones led to the contract, then the excessive expansion of blood vessels.

The impact of remedial measures may vary from person to person, it is necessary to identify the most suitable one of you, and the corresponding selection. It is always best to consult a doctor, and plan out the best way for you for treating your headaches. However, there is still a certain amount of temporary relief, but the doctors should seek a permanent cure.

Short-term temporary relief to certain things immediately capture results. To list some: there is a bathtub or shower; lie down to rest in a dark room to avoid the bright, blinking lights; put things back the Cold War you neck or forehead; drink water or natural fruit juice; press two pressure points after your neck; to avoid sources of stress in your life; take some vitamins.

Don’t Let Frequent, Bad Headaches Keep You Out Of Work

Almost everyone has an occasional headache, but when headaches affect work performance, it may be something more. Simply completing tasks might be difficult, let alone maintaining productivity. Yet frequent, bad headaches affect more working Americans than you may think.

A new survey of more than 1,400 working adults shows that of those who have bad headaches, more than one-third have at least one per month, and about half of these people report that their headaches made them work less effectively or decreased their productivity. Despite this significant impact on their work performance, fewer than one in five have sought medical attention for their headaches.

A natural cure is now available – click here to see more.

The survey provides a first-hand perspective of the workplace consequences of frequent, bad headaches, defined as a bad headache occurring at least once per month. Of the 508 survey respondents who said they get frequent, bad headaches:

• More than three-quarters said they developed a bad headache at work.

• One-third have had to leave work early or have rested in their office because of a bad headache.

• Over one-quarter have called in sick because of a bad headache.

Many respondents reported headache symptoms that are consistent with migraine headache:

• About half reported moderate to severe or throbbing head pain.

• More than 40 percent noted pain on one side of the head.

• One-third cited sensitivity to light and sound.

"What I found interesting about the survey findings is the extent to which frequent, bad headache sufferers described symptoms consistent with migraine, yet had not talked to a doctor about their headaches," said Dr. Merle Diamond, associate director of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. "There are an estimated 14 million Americans who suffer from migraines and who have not yet been diagnosed. When frequent, bad headaches include symptoms like moderate to severe pain, pain on one side of the head and sensitivity to light and sound, they may be migraines."

For years researchers have acknowledged that migraine is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed. The Landmark Study, published in Headache, evaluated more than 1,200 patients who visited a physician about their headaches and found that 9 out of 10 patients had migraine or probable migraine and one in four did not get the proper diagnosis. This failure to diagnose migraines may be due in part to a lack of understanding of migraine, and the similarity in symptoms to other, better-recognized conditions.

"Headaches that occur more than two to three times per week or impact work or social activities should be evaluated by a physician," continued Dr. Diamond.

Inadequately or Untreated Migraines Are a Cost Burden for Employers

In the United States, employers face a considerable cost burden as a consequence of migraine. According to results presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Headache Society this past June, migraines cost employers nearly $10 billion a year due to migraine-related absenteeism. Migraine-specific medications may be prescribed in an effort to manage migraine symptoms and, as a result, may allow employees to work more effectively than if their migraines are left untreated.

Important Safety Information About Imitrex for Migraine Headaches

Imitrex is approved for the acute treatment of migraines, with and without aura, in adults. Patients should not take Imitrex if they have certain types of heart disease, history of stroke or TIAs, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud’s syndrome, or blood pressure that is uncontrolled. Patients with risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or being a smoker, should be evaluated by a doctor before taking Imitrex. Very rarely, certain people, even some without heart disease, have had serious heart-related problems. Patients who are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications should talk to their doctor.

What About Aura & Migraine Pain?

Migraine without aura is a common migraine without aura but exhibits the same symptoms as a classic migraine except that it does not exhibit any aura.

People who primarily suffer from migraine with aura may also have attacks of migraine without aura. Headache with the features of "migraine without aura" usually follows the aura symptoms. Less commonly, the aura may occur without a subsequent headache or the headache may be non-migrainous in type.

Migraine with aura is a classical migraine preceded by an aura before the attack. The aura occurs for about 10-30 minutes and then is usually followed by a headache. It is quite similar to a common migraine except in the aspect of the aura.About 15% of migraine sufferers have a early warning that the headache is coming on. This change in brain function is called an "aura". It is usually a visual symptom, such as an arc of sparkling (scintillating) zig-zag lines or a blotting out of vision or both. The aura is due to changes that take place in the cortex, the outer layer of the brain. This slowly spreading depression of nerve cell activity is believed to account for the pattern of development of the typical aura.

Auras set in about 20-30 minutes before the migraine attack. Some patients also describe the presence of a strange odor, before the onset of a migraine. They also experience a tingling sensation in an arm or leg.

In the classic migraine aura, symptoms build up gradually and move slowly from one visual region or one part of the body to another. For example, the migraine aura sufferer may first notice a black spot in the field of vision. This black spot is often surrounded by flashing lights or bright zig-zag lines as mentioned.

What starts this sequence of events that leads to the aura and migraine? The answers to thisquestion are not fully understood. Migraine sufferers have an unborn susceptibility to factors that normally do not trigger headaches.

In people with migraines, changes in body chemistry, such as menstruation, certain foods, and dozens of environmental influences, such as a change in weather, may trigger a migraine attack. A migraine trigger is any factor that, on exposure or withdrawal, leads to the development of an acute migraine headache. Triggers may be categorized as behavioral, environmental, infectious, dietary, chemical, or hormonal. In medical literature, these factors are known as ‘precipitants.’

Neither type of migraine denotes a life-threatening disorder but, they can be chronic and recurrent, thus interfering with a person’s daily lifestyle. Both migraine types have the usual pain, nausea, vomiting and intolerance to light and sound, which is worsened by any physical activity.

Treatment? The treatment for migraines begins with simple painkillers for headache and anti-emetics for nausea, and avoidance of triggers if present. Specific anti-migraine drugs can be used to treat migraine. Homeopathic Drugs and Special all natural ingredient products such as those at the Centre for Pain Relief in Burlington, New Jersey have proven effective. If the migraine condition is severe and frequent enough, preventative drugs might be considered. The most commonly used "reversal" medicines are trip-tans. Trip-tans work by boosting the effects of the brain chemical serotonin, which reduces the severity and duration of an attack. Propranolol, a beta blocker, and Topiramate have proven effective for migraine sufferers as well.

When it comes to treatment however, "Migraine is the most misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and mistreated condition in medical practice," states Dr. Seymour Diamond, M.D., who is the executive chairman for the National Headache Foundation and director of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago.

As always, talk to your doctor about whether or not you have with Aura or without Aura to find the medication that works best for you.

Get To Know Your Cause Of A Migraine Headache

Migraine headaches are one of the most common types of headaches, and there are plenty of factors causing them, though whenever a migraine headache strikes, it does suddenly and without any visible reason. According to many medical researches serotonin plays an important role in triggering migraines. To identify your cause of a migraine headache consult with your doctor.

Where the chemical called serotonin is concerned, its levels could be responsible for migraines, though there are tons of other causes for migraine headaches, such as stress, food allergies, working with bright lights, having a cold, pregnancy and many others.

It may take quite some time to identify what exactly is the cause of a migraine headache in your case. Until then, you could get relief by taking over-the-counter medicines, or trying a number of home remedies, which though simple, are often incredibly effective.

To fight with this awful malady you first have to collect information about the occurrences. Keep notes on when the migraine attacks and have these records ready when you visit your doctor. If the reason is not clear, you will be asked to undertake a number of tests, which can identify the cause of a migraine headache more accurately. Do not forget to note what types of remedies have been tried to cure the headache.

It may come as news to you, but children suffer from migraines as much as adults do. Unfortunately, children are rarely believed when they say they have a headache because adults often take such complaints as attempts for getting out of things like going to school. Agreed, at times this is exactly the idea; however, if children say they are suffering from headaches they should be referred to a doctor for further check up.

The cause of migraine headaches is difficult to pinpoint without a number of tests. However, doctors are fast in getting to the root of this problem once they get information regarding the time, date, frequency and any other helpful material that you have gathered.

Though the majority of causes of a migraine headache still remain a mystery, it has been observed that the migraine can be controlled with home remedies, over-the-counter medicines and a lot of sleep. It has been proven that drinking hot herbal tea is also beneficial in some cases. Chamomile tea and green tea have been observed to be especially helpful providing a very soothing effect when migraine strikes.
